Champaign schools are committed to providing visual arts and music instruction, taught by an arts specialist, on a regular basis from Kindergarten through 7th grade. From 8th grade through 12th grade students are presented with an extensive choice of Fine Arts electives including instrumental and vocal music, specialized visual arts classes, and dramatic and performing arts classes. Through their arts exposure students learn the language of the arts and how to interpret visual images, sounds, movement and story. Through their study of universal and culturally specific arts, students gain a greater understanding of their own cultural heritage and their larger world community.
When students study the arts they become more informed, and appreciative, audience members. They also become more discriminating as consumers of popular culture, an increasingly important skill in their world of electronic media.
