About the project

The Centennial High School project is a $76.4 million expansion and renovation that will meet the capacity needs of our student population and eliminate portable classrooms. The project will allow us to:

  • Renovate and repair existing infrastructure, including HVAC, windows, and security systems.

  • Modernize all classrooms, music, arts, as well as common spaces such as the auditorium and cafeteria.

  • Construct Career & Technical Education spaces.

  • Expand gym space to accommodate growing enrollment and eliminate portable classrooms.

  • Renovate and refurbish on-site fields for physical education, athletics, and band.

  • Continued use of Tommy Stewart field for Friday night football games by both high schools.

What's happening now?

  • Spring 2018 - After meetings with District and school staff and two community info nights (January 10 and April 17), the project management team reviewed and incorporated feedback. Design will continue until the end of 2018.

  • Summer 2018 - Site preparation and utility work completed prior to the start of the school year.

  • Fall 2018 Design continued through the end of 2018. A Community Info Night for Central, Centennial and McKinley Field was held Oct. 30 at Central High School Library for community members to see the latest progress and provide feedback.

  • Winter 2019 - Hazardous material abatement occurred over winter break, and more will happen in February. Minor utility relocation will be coordinated with local utilities. Bid documents for the addition and expansion will be released in February and March.

  • Summer 2019 - Hazardous material abatement.  Structural work for both additions.  Full renovation of the pool, gym and other portions of the north wing (some mechanical and electrical outages are expected).  Various site utilities and other site work will be on-going.

  • Fall 2019 - Finishing renovation and site work through the fall. Work will continue on the two additions. Structural work including mechanical, electrical, HVAC, and infrastructure continues. Preparation for interior work over winter break.

  • Winter/Spring 2020 - Hazardous material abatement will take place.  Portions of the existing building will be vacated and interior renovations will begin.  The two additions will become weather-tight and interior build-out will begin.  Preparation and coordination for Summer 2020 work will continue.  The procurement process for some of the new furniture will begin.

  • Spring 2020 - Hazardous material abatement continues.  The existing cafeteria, kitchen, and adjacent rooms to the north are under construction.  The two additions are weather-tight and most of the walls are constructed with painting and new ceilings are on-going at most locations.  Mechanical/electrical/plumbing rough-in work continues.  Preparation for Summer 2020 work continues.  The first phase of furniture procurement has been ordered with delivery and installation expected this summer.

  • Summer/Fall 2020 - Hazardous material abatement continued. Many areas of the existing building were under construction, including the cafeteria, kitchen, Band, Choir, and many classrooms.  The two additions received finish painting and flooring in many areas. Mechanical/electrical/plumbing rough-in work and trim-out was completed. The first phase of furniture arrived in July. Exterior site work proceeded in earnest.

  • Fall 2020 - Many areas of the existing building were occupied including the cafeteria, kitchen, band and choirs rooms, and several classrooms. Many punch list and open items in those areas remain to be completed. The two additions have been occupied, while some work on punch list items continues in those areas.  Hazardous material abatement and renovation of a portion of the 2nd floor of the existing building continues. The concrete for the new drive on the east was poured and most of the remaining site work is completed.

  • Winter 2020/2021 - Hazardous material abatement is scheduled to be mostly complete throughout the building.  The renovations of the 2nd floor classroom area of the existing building will be completed and construction work will begin in another portion of the 1st floor.  Another phase of furniture will be delivered and installed.  Programming and design work for the existing gym floor replacement will begin.

  • Spring/Summer 2021 - The project is in the homestretch!  Targeting substantial completion in August 2021.  The east infill addition was turned over mid-March and is in use by school staff.  1st floor existing building classrooms are under renovation targeting an August completion.  Pool deck tile replacement and Carrodine gym floor replacement are underway.  The last major area to move into the renovation phase is the Library/Media Center.  Work will begin in early June and finish in time for the new school year.  Landscaping will be completed as planting season allows.

  • Fall 2021 - The project reached substantial completion in August and the final occupancy permit from the Regional Office of Education was received. 2021 summer renovation work included the first floor of the existing building, Carrodine Gym painting and new wood floor installation and Media Center renovations.  New lower level bleachers for the Carrodine Gym are expected to arrive in October.
