About the project

The Spalding Park project is a $3.8 million renovation in partnership with the Champaign Park District that will provide updated athletic facilities to Central High School and Franklin Middle School students, coaches and community. The project will allow us to provide:

  • New competition baseball field
    • Dugouts, bullpens, batting cages
    • Backstop/fencing/stadium netting
    • Field lighting, scoreboard, PA system
    • Bleachers
    • New practice infield
  • Support building
  • Basketball court with lighting

What's happening now?

  • Spring 2018 - After meetings with athletics staff, the Champaign Park District, and a community info night (January 31), the project management team reviewed staff and community feedback on design plans and incorporated suggestions. A formal groundbreaking event was held May 31 at Spalding Park.

  • Summer 2018 - Construction was ongoing. Much of the site preparation work was complete.

  • Fall/Winter 2018 - Construction of the concession building and dugouts was ongoing and scheduled for completion in January 2019. Mechanical and electrical work neared completion. Sod for the competition field was completed. Synthetic turf and field lighting were installed in early October. Miscellaneous concrete and fencing work happened throughout.

  • Winter 2019 - Construction of the concession building was substantially complete. Dugouts, miscellaneous concrete and fencing work was ongoing.

  • Spring 2019 - Work on fencing and the warning track is ongoing. A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held March 11, for the first home game of the season. Work continued on batting cage structure and seeding. Project was substantially complete.

  • Summer 2019 - The Batter's Eye was installed.
