More about the Parent and Family Learning Lab

Since 2019 PFLL has been uplifting whole families by providing structured, culturally responsive literacy support for children and their adult household members, parenting support, and family activities through a 3-way partnership among Project READ (Parkland College Adult Education), The Center for Family and Community Engagement at Champaign Unit 4 Schools, and the Douglass Branch of the Champaign Public Library.

The PFLL nourishes and develops family-based learning by providing customized online and/or in-person activities that promote a community of learning. Dedicated specialists from our partnership create and facilitate our activities, make regular support phone calls to parents, and coordinate one-to-one tutoring for children and their adult household members.

Registered Families will enjoy:*

1. Free one-to-one adult tutoring in ESL, basic math or reading

2. Parenting educational and support activities

3. PACT (Parent and Child Together activities) such as family yoga or scavenger hunts

4. Library Activities such as story time and free, high-interest, level appropriate books

5. Children’s education and academic support

Families that participate in these 5 elements of the Lab for at least 20 hours can choose a prize such as a rice cooker, glass blender, toaster oven, or cast-iron skillet. We also coordinate tutoring for children, upon request.

*All activities are planned in-person at Stratton Academy on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:00-8:00pm, beginning October 6, but may pivot to remote programming via Zoom/WhatsApp and Facebook or doorstep activity packages delivered to our families.  Walk-in enrollment welcome and encouraged!
