E-Learning Emergency Days

Generally during the winter months, we are often faced with the potential of needing to use “Snow Days.” Those emergency snow days often require that we add instructional days at the end of the school year. The General Assembly has allowed for school districts to establish “E-Learning” programs which would allow students to attend classes remotely in the event of a school closure emergency, such as during a winter storm. By utilizing an approved “E-Learning” program, the District will alleviate the need to “add days” at the end of the school calendar in such situations. While emergency days will continue to be built into the District Calendar each school year, the E-Learning program helps ensure that the required number of instructional days are met by using E-Learning days in lieu of traditional emergency days.

How Does Champaign Unit 4 Plan to Use Its E-Learning Program?

District Administration monitors developments, such as weather conditions, to prepare for an E-learning Day, if needed. The Superintendent will announce the possibility of an E-Learning Day as soon as practical (but no later than 2:00 p.m. the day before). This will provide time for staff to gather resources and prepare accordingly.  It will also allow families to make necessary arrangements.

Once the possibility of an E-Learning Day has been announced, the Superintendent will continue to monitor the weather forecast closely. As soon as it becomes clear that we will not be able to hold school in person, a final decision to hold an E-Learning Day will be made and another announcement will go out to staff and families.

Families will be notified by SMS, emails, and on the District’s website.

If weather predictions prevent us from announcing the possibility of an E-Learning Day the day prior, E-Learning will not be used. Instead, a traditional "Snow Day" will be called by 6:00 a.m. the day of the inclement weather. Activities, practices, and rehearsals which occur outside of the normal school day would be addressed on a case-by-case basis when an E-Learning Day is confirmed.
