AVID

We are pleased to announce that Jefferson Middle School was officially revalidated as a National Demonstration School by AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination). This is an honor that less than 200 schools hold in the country.

Being a National AVID Demonstration School means that Jefferson is able to demonstrate an ongoing pursuit of excellence, both in the AVID Elective and AVID Schoolwide. Part of this includes using WICOR (Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading) as the instructional framework. Jefferson’s students exemplify and believe, “Words have power so use them wisely.” Jefferson students displayed the power in their words through the use of WICOR strategies during today’s visit.

Dr. Mykah Jackson, Unit 4’s Director of College and Career Readiness stated, “Achieving the work of National AVID Demonstration status is not the work of one person, but a team…the students, their families, the staff and administration. I am so proud of our Jefferson AVID Family. It is a true testament to the sense of community needed for success in education.”

Jefferson Principal Kyle Freeman added, “Jefferson Middle School is proud to be revalidated as an AVID National Demonstration School. This demonstrates our commitment to our students and families as we continue to showcase our intentional use of rigorous instruction.”

Thank you to the hard work of our dedicated staff at Jefferson Middle School and our College and Career Readiness team for making this revalidation a reality.

Unit 4 Schools currently has eight elementary schools, three middle schools, and two high schools (Bottenfield, Robeson, IPA, Garden Hills, Booker T. Washington, Barkstall, Stratton, Westview, Jefferson, Edison, Franklin, Central, and Centennial) officially implementing the AVID system of support. Unit 4 houses three (Jefferson, Franklin, Edison) out of four National AVID Demonstration Sites in the state of Illinois.
