Kenwood Kindergarten

September 8th, 2023

Dear Kenwood Families,

Happy Friday! Thank you for your cooperation this past week with student drop off at the front door as this has helped our teachers to begin lessons on time and maintain the security of our building. This coming week we have a number of state required drills for students. The first of these is our bus evacuation drills which is important for all students as we do use buses for our field trips as well. We also have our tornado drill to ensure that everyone knows where to go in the event of a severe weather event. The final drill is the lockdown drill which has previously been identified as the ALICE drill is an acronym for Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter and Evacuate and is an evidence-based plan that aligns with the recommendations from the U.S. Department of Education and has been used in school districts across the nation. The District has been using ALICE since 2015. Our school will only be practicing the lockdown component of ALICE during the Law Enforcement Lockdown Drill. During this drill students, an announcement will be made to staff and students that we are conducting the lockdown drill. Teachers will ensure students are safely in the classroom and lock doors from the inside while getting into the lockdown position. Kenwood will be participating in the drill at 1:30pm on Friday, Sept. 15th. Please see the letter regarding Law Enforcement Drills.

Erin’s Law

Kenwood School is coordinating services with the Rape Advocacy, Counseling and Education Services (RACES) to assist with teaching the Erin's Law for this school year. The Erin's Law requires schools to teach students age appropriate techniques to recognize child sexual abuse and to tell a trusted adult.

Kenwood School is using the Second Step: Child Protection Unit curriculum in your child's classroom in collaboration with the Rape Advocacy, Counseling and Education Services (RACES). The Child Protection Unit program teaches children important personal safety skills and helps our school be a safe and supportive place where everyone can learn. If you have any questions or concerns about the RACES curriculum, please contact Ellen Schultz, School Social Worker at Kenwood School for more information. Contact may be made by leaving a message at (217) 351-3815 or emailing at schultel@u4sd.org.

If you DO NOT want your child to participate in these Erin's Law lessons, please contact your child's teacher by Monday, September 11. All students will participate in these lessons unless we receive contact from a parent. Thank you for helping us make our school a safe and supportive place where everyone can learn.

Have a great weekend!

Sincerely,

Dr. Trevor Nadrozny
