Teacher of the Week

December 6th, 2024

Dear Kenwood Families,

Happy Friday! This past week winter arrived with the cold temperatures and indoor recesses. I wanted to just share a friendly reminder to be sure students are coming with adequate winter wear including hats, gloves and coats for safety. Students will go outside if the weather permits and the temperatures are above 20 degrees Fahrenheit. One of the considerations during inclement weather is the possibility of eLearning days for students. If the Superintendent deems that the weather is too dangerous for students there is a possibility that students would do an eLearning day at home which would include on-line learning through Chromebooks for 2.5 hours. More specific guidance on eLearning days can be found on the Unit 4 website below:

National Computer Science Education Week - CS ED Week

Next week is National Computer Science Education Week. This is one of our school’s most important events because of our focus on Computer Science and Computational Thinking. We have recognized that coding can begin at any age and our students will be participating in the ‘Hour of Code’ next week along with millions of other students across the country. We also recognize the importance of coding as a way of problem solving, building persistence and collaboration as students work together to help create code for a variety of problems. We have a number of fun and engaging unplugged coding as well as robotics activities for our students next. Be sure to ask your students about their coding experiences. Thanks to our Technology committee for helping to coordinate these activities for next week.

MAP Testing (Kindergarten through 5th grade)

Next week, our students will be completing the MAP test which is a nationally normed test in the areas of Reading and Mathematics. This test is given in the Fall, Winter and Spring and our teachers use the results of this information to look at the current academic performance of our students. Teachers will use this information in their instructional planning to best meet the needs of our students. I’ve included a parent guide to MAP for your information.

K/1 Grade Level Night: Code for a Cookie

Just a reminder of our Kindergarten and First Grade level night at Kenwood on Monday, Dec. 12th from 6 until 7pm.
