Dear Kenwood Families,
Happy Friday! I hope this finds you well. This past week we celebrated Earth Day and students were able to participate in a variety of activities celebrating and demonstrating care for our planet. This past week we also hosted our 3rd grade level night and thanks to everyone who were able to come out for this fun event. Today, our Girls on the Run club will be participating in the 5 K run as part of the Illinois Marathon weekend. We wish them all the best as they have been practicing every week for the past several months with Coach Yasunaga and Coach Beckom. Included below are some upcoming events at Kenwood.
Building Evacuation Drill, May 9th
As part of our safety and security drills, schools across the district are conducting Building Evacuation Drills. Kenwood will be conducting our building evacuation drill on May 9th and we will be evacuating to our evacuation site, Centennial High School. The evacuation drill will be much like our fire drills in that students will walk calmly and quietly out of the building, lead by members of our School Crisis Team and followed by a member of our team who will do a sweep of the building prior to leaving. We will proceed to Centennial High School where we will assemble in one of their gyms. Once we assemble at Centennial, we will do a quick roll call and proceed back to Kenwood. We recognize that this is a big event for our students and as such we will be talking with them prior to the evacuation drill so they are aware of what to expect and the reasons for this drill. Please be advised that this drill will be taking part at the end of the day and office staff will not be in the office to take your calls. If you are wanting to pick up your child on this day it will need to be before 1:15pm. If weather does not permit our drill, we will reschedule for May 16th. If you have any questions please feel free to reach out.
Kenwood School is coordinating services with the Rape Advocacy, Counseling and Education Services (RACES) to assist with teaching the Erin's Law for this school year. The Erin's Law requires schools to teach students age appropriate techniques to recognize child sexual abuse and to tell a trusted adult.
Kenwood School is using the Second Step: Child Protection Unit curriculum in your child's classroom in collaboration with the Rape Advocacy, Counseling and Education Services (RACES). The Child Protection Unit program teaches children important personal safety skills and helps our school be a safe and supportive place where everyone can learn. If you have any questions or concerns about the RACES curriculum, please contact Ellen Schultz, School Social Worker at Kenwood School for more information. Contact may be made by leaving a message at (217) 351-3815 or emailing at schultel@u4sd.org.
If you DO NOT want your child to participate in these Erin's Law lessons, please contact your child's teacher by Friday, May 2. All students will participate in these lessons unless we receive contact from a parent. Thank you for helping us make our school a safe and supportive place where everyone can learn.
Dress Code
Recently, we have had a number of students wearing Heelys or other shoes with roller skates or wheels. As you can imagine, this presents a danger when students are using these shoes at high speeds in our crowded hallway with younger students present. I would ask that you ensure that these types of shoes remain at home for everyone’s safety. Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions.
Have a great weekend,
Dr. Trevor Nadrozny
