During Women’s History Month, we want to recognize Champaign Unit 4’s first female superintendent, Dr. Judy Wiegand. While the District had “acting” female superintendents prior to 2012, Dr. Wiegand is the first one appointed by the Board of Education.
Dr. Wiegand began her career in Unit 4 in 1987 as a special education teacher. She also served as Dean of Students, Assistant Principal and Principal of Centennial High School, as well as Director of Secondary Education, and Assistant Superintendent for Achievement and Pupil Services before being named Superintendent in 2012.
During Dr. Wiegand’s tenure as Superintendent, she oversaw the planning and passage of the 2016 building projects referendum, bringing much-needed upgrades to seven of our schools and other important projects that positively impacted our students and community.
Since her appointment in 2012, Unit 4 Schools has been led by a female in the superintendent’s role. We salute Dr. Wiegand for being a trailblazing leader.
We honor all the women who have served and are currently serving in our District for their diligent work to help enrich the lives of our students and community as a whole.
Reminder: Returning student 1st through 12th grade registration is now open. All Kindergarten registration will be open at a later date.
Dr. Boozer featured in the News-Gazette's eight-page special section celebrating Women’s History Month today. You can read her self-reflection in this post below:

On February 26, 1987 President Ronald Reagan officially declared Proclamation 5613 making March National Disabilities Awareness Month. The proclamation called for people to provide understanding, encouragement and opportunities to help persons with disabilities to lead productive and fulfilling lives. The mission of Unit 4's Special Education Department is to meet the diverse needs of students with disabilities by providing individualized instruction and services that will result in measurable and meaningful student growth.
